Officials broke ground Monday on a new high-speed rail system that will connect Southern California and Las Vegas. The Brightline West system, touted as the "first true high-speed rail system" in the U.S., will run across a 218-mile route between Las Vegas and three California stops including Rancho Cucamonga, about 40 miles east of Los Angeles. Brightline's first rail system launched in Florida and the route spans between Miami and Orlando. Trains reach speeds of up to 125 mph, connecting the two cities in about 3.5 hours. "People have been dreaming of high-speed rail in America for decades — and now, with billions of dollars of support made possible by President Biden's historic infrastructure law, it's finally happening," Buttigieg said in the release.

New York CNN —More than 4,500 flights are delayed or canceled across the US on Sunday evening as California continues to brace for the impact from Tropical Storm Hilary. There are also some delays at international airports in Denver and Phoenix, as the ripple effect from the storm spreads. The storm has not yet made landfall in the US, but it slammed Mexico’s Baja California region earlier Sunday. Hilary is likely to bring severe flooding to parts of California and Nevada, which could experience a year’s worth of rain on Sunday.

CNN —Residents in the Southwest are bracing for heavy rains and potentially catastrophic flooding as Hurricane Hilary is expected to pummel the region as a rare tropical storm beginning Sunday and lasting into next week. Its core is expected to pass close to the peninsula Saturday night and then weaken into a tropical storm as it crosses into the US and Southern California. The threat has triggered California’s first ever tropical storm warning extending from the state’s southern border to just north of Los Angeles. “Preparations for the impacts of flooding from rainfall should be completed as soon as possible, as heavy rain will increase ahead of the center on Saturday,” the hurricane center said. In 2020, Biden flipped the key states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, pulling away support from many independents who had backed Trump in the 2016 election. Trump easily won the 2016 Republican presidential caucus in Nevada, when he was fresh on the political scene. And the Nevada Republican Party awarded all of its delegates to Trump in 2020. The Nevada Republican Party has sued the state to restore the caucus system next year.

Beyond their star appeal, low-cost tiny homes like Casitas have real-world utility. The homes have been seized upon as a solution for cities like Los Angeles to house the homeless. They showed off their homes' transportability by hitching several of them to a Tesla and filming drag races between Teslas and trucks that were hooked to trailers carrying the homes. So far, though, after a little more than a year of building, the company has fabricated only about 400 homes. Even if it were churning out thousands of units, Boxabl hasn't yet received the certifications required to sell them in most states across the country.

Tesla plans to spend $3.6 billion more on expanded battery and heavy duty truck manufacturing in Nevada, the company said Tuesday on social media. It wasn't immediately clear whether Tesla's plans expand the company's manufacturing footprint beyond the property it is already developing outside of Reno in Sparks, Nevada. Tesla began construction of its first battery factory in Nevada in 2014. Joe Lombardo revealed details about Tesla's plans for expansion in the state early on Monday. Tesla CEO Elon Musk held a ceremony in Nevada in December to kick off deliveries of the company's Tesla Semi to a key early customer, PepsiCo .
